Each player has five cards in their hand. One of these cards is always shown in profile, as the jack of spades. All other cards are shown face up. The value of each card in the deck is not related to its suit. The value of a hand is calculated by dividing the mathematical frequency of its use by the value of the card.

The first player to make a bet is said to bet, and the last player to make a bet is said not to bet. This is also known as a forced bet. A forced bet may be in the form of a call, a raise, or a fold. The player who makes the bet is said to be the active player, while the other players are said to be the seated players.
